On Saturday, September 19, the Clásico Nacional of the Apertura 2026 takes place at Estadio Banorte. And it couldn't come at a better time: Chivas lead the table with 17 points from eight games and América are third with 16 from seven. Whoever wins goes to bed at the top or very close to it. These are the numbers that matter to us ahead of the biggest game in Mexican football.
Chivas: seven games unbeaten
Guadalajara started the tournament with a blow: a 0-2 home defeat to Toluca on matchday one. They haven't lost since. That's seven straight games with five wins and two draws, and an overall record of 15 goals scored and 6 conceded.
The latest was an emphatic 3-0 over Pumas at Estadio Akron. Santiago Sandoval headed in the opener in the 3rd minute from a Fernando González cross and struck again in the 56th from an Ángel Sepúlveda pass. Bryan González completed the scoring in the 67th, assisted by Efraín Álvarez. Sandoval heads into the Clásico off a brace in his last game.
One stat that caught our eye: Chivas had 65.3% of possession but only took 8 shots, 5 on target, and scored three. Pumas shot almost twice as often, 15 times, also with 5 on target, and didn't score. This is a team that doesn't need many chances. And they don't lose on the road: two wins and two draws, with 6 goals scored and only 2 conceded.
América: a wild night against Cruz Azul
América came in with five wins and one draw, having conceded only 2 goals in six games. Then came the Clásico Joven on Saturday the 12th: Cruz Azul won 4-3 in a game that had everything.
Érik Lira opened the scoring in the 19th, José Paradela added the second in the 35th and Jesús Orozco made it three just before halftime, in the 45th. Paradela was involved in all three first-half goals: one of his own and two assists. Cruz Azul even had a penalty saved, from Nicolás Ibáñez in the 43rd. Brian Rodríguez pulled one back with a free kick in the 52nd, Gabriel Fernández made it 4-1 in the 72nd and América pushed late with goals from Óscar Perea and Miguel Borja in the 90th. It wasn't enough.
The match stats explain the frustration among América fans: 57% possession and 28 shots, 10 of them on target. Cruz Azul shot 16 times, also with 10 on target, and scored four. In a single night, América conceded twice as many goals as in their previous six games combined.
Two teams with identical numbers
Here's the quirk of this preview. América and Chivas have exactly the same goal record: 15 scored and 6 conceded, a goal difference of +9 each. Both have won five games and lost one.
The difference lies in where they've earned their points. América are the tournament's perfect home side: three home games, three wins, 8 goals scored and none conceded, with victories over Santos (3-0), San Luis (3-0) and Puebla (2-0). Chivas, for their part, are the road team that doesn't lose. The Clásico pits exactly those two streaks against each other.
The first-place math
Before the Clásico, Toluca, who also have 16 points from seven games, play their game in hand at Puebla on Tuesday the 15th. If they win, they'll head into the weekend as leaders on 19 points.
For the Clásico, the scenarios are clear. If Chivas win, they reach 20 points and strengthen their grip at the top. If América win, they move up to 19 and overtake their rival. A draw would leave Chivas on 18 and América on 17. Toluca also host Santos on Sunday the 20th, so the table on Monday the 21st will depend on all three.
Our take
What intrigues us most is América's defense. Six near-perfect games and then, suddenly, four goals conceded. Was it a one-off or a warning sign? The Clásico is the best possible test, because Chivas arrive with a striker in form and a habit of turning few chances into goals.
On the other side, América generated 28 shots against Cruz Azul: the attack is working. At home, they have yet to concede a goal. If they keep that solidity and keep getting forward that often, it will be very hard for Chivas to take the game. If it looks like last Saturday's end-to-end affair, Chivas' clinical finishing could decide it.
