Primera División de Paraguay
The Paraguayan Primera División is the country's top football championship, organised by the Paraguayan Football Association (APF). It is a league with deep tradition in South America: its clubs have been historic protagonists of the Copa Libertadores, and it has produced generations of players who go on to succeed in Argentina, Brazil, Mexico and Europe.
Two tournaments are played every year, the Apertura and the Clausura, and each one crowns its own champion. In each tournament the twelve teams play each other home and away. The season's aggregate table allocates the places for the Copa Libertadores and the Copa Sudamericana, and relegation is decided by the average points of recent seasons, a system that punishes inconsistency and rewards stable projects.
Olimpia and Cerro Porteño contest the superclásico of Paraguayan football, the match that divides the country. Olimpia is the club with the most league titles and the only Paraguayan side to have won the Copa Libertadores, in 1979, 1990 and 2002. Libertad has established itself as one of the big clubs of recent decades, and historic sides such as Guaraní, Nacional and Sportivo Luqueño complete a league where upsets are common.
