Soccer glossary: basic terms every fan should know

Soccer has a language all its own. Play-by-play announcers, pundits and fans use expressions that aren't always obvious to someone who's just starting to follow the sport. This glossary gathers the most common terms, explained simply, so you can enjoy every match understanding everything that happens.
Game terms
Offside: an attacker is offside if, at the moment a teammate plays the ball, he is ahead of the second-to-last opposing defender and involved in the play. It's one of the most controversial rules in the game.
Tiki-taka: a playing style built on keeping possession through short, continuous passing, made famous by Barcelona and the Spain national team.
Counterattack: a fast move that exploits the opponent being out of position after losing the ball, aiming to reach the opposing goal before the defense can regroup.
Pressing: the strategy of putting pressure on the opponent in their own half to win the ball back as quickly as possible.
Plays and goals
Hat-trick: when the same player scores three goals in a single match.
Brace: two goals by the same player in one match.
Golazo: a goal of great beauty or difficulty, the kind people remember (and the one this website is named after).
Own goal: a goal a player scores, unintentionally, into his own net.
Golden goal: a now-defunct rule under which the first goal in extra time ended the match immediately.
Positions and roles
Sweeper (libero): a center back with the freedom to bring the ball out and organize play, a classic role that is rarely seen today.
Holding midfielder (or '5'): a player who shields the defense and wins the ball back in the middle of the pitch.
Winger: an attacking player who operates close to the touchline, looking to beat his man and deliver crosses.
Center forward (or '9'): the focal point of the attack, chiefly responsible for scoring goals.
Competition and rules
Goal difference: a tiebreaker in the standings, calculated by subtracting goals conceded from goals scored.
Playoff: a decisive knockout tie, usually a single match or two legs, used to settle promotions, titles or qualification spots.
Extra time: two additional 15-minute periods played when a knockout match ends in a draw.
Penalty shootout: the final tiebreaker from the spot when extra time still fails to produce a winner.
